German tennis player Sarah Gronert has been ruled eligible to play at the highest level by the WTA. Questions had been raised over her gender as she was born with male as well as female genitalia. Her male genitalia has been removed.
“There is no girl who can hit serves like that, not even Venus Williams. I don’t know if it’s fair that she can compete or not. She does have an advantage…” said the coach of a player recently defeated by Gronert.
The 22-year-old, ranked 555 in the world, considered leaving tennis over the dispute. There is another transsexual currently playing on the women’s circuit. In 1977 Renee Richards reached a world ranking of 22 after a sex change.
