Officials in Montreal have failed to have the Canadian Grand Prix picked up by the Formula One for next year’s schedule, following intense meetings with F1 brass. The scrapping of the Canadian GP means no races will be held in North America in 2009.
Montreal claimed that talks failed because the Formula One made “unreasonable demands”, which included any promoter having to guarantee government or private funding of some .3 million over five years.
Montreal’s mayor, Gerald Tremblay, said that, “Despite our endeavours, the unreasonable demands of Formula One exceeded the taxpayer’s ability to pay.” The North American market is a lucrative one for F1 teams, who have voiced dismay at the decision.![]()
