Hitting a Birdie Good in Golf, in Soccer Not So Much

Argentina: A pigeon has been fatally injured after being struck by a ball during a round-robin match between Tigre and San Lorenzo. The pigeon collapsed and died, surrounded by concerned players. It was eventually moved out of play by the referee.

Gaston Aguirre, the San Lorenzo player who kicked the ball expressed sympathy for the bird and concern for his legacy. “I kicked the ball and, poor pigeon. Now I will be remembered as the pigeon killer,” he said. San Lorenzo won 2-1.

Birds have come off second best in a number of encounters with sports balls. Randy Johnson felled a dove with a fastball in 2001. Last year Tripp Isenhour pleaded no contest to criminal charges after killing a protected hawk with a golf ball.
